They Can’t Handle the Truth.
The Meppers have discussed The Colbert Report on several occasions–but I was glad to see someone has finally decided to back us up on our shocking conclusion that, uh, he’s joking, even if some people don’t get it.
According to this study from Ohio State, “conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements.” And according to the Huffington Post, some of these conservatives are annoyed by Colbert’s “pretend joking”; Representative Bill Posey, who wanted to require presidential candidates to provide a copy of their original birth certificate to certify their citizenship (because, you know, you can’t trust those candidates with Islamic sounding names to tell the truth about being Americans, can you?), was less amused by Colbert’s suggestion that he do the same thing to certify he’s not a human-alligator hybrid. Posey’s reply? “I expected there would be some civil debate about it, but it wasn’t civil…There is no reason to say that I’m the illegitimate grandson of an alligator.”
And Posey’s right. Consider:
See? Absolutely no similarity. Hell, if you just look at the recently discovered photos of his ancient ancestors, you’ll see that Posey has absolutely no…
…oh.
Hmm.
I mean, if he’s got nothing to hide, one little birth certificate copy shouldn’t be a big deal, right?
Hilarious! I actually think he does look like an alligator — much more than the mummy. But I should point out that that mummy is housed in a store on a Seattle Pier and that many scientists believe that it is actually the remnants of an alligator that died eating a human male.
Fooling suckers, I guess, is part of Colberts charm. I like his brand of comedy way more than John Stewart. Stewart’s smarminess sometimes grates the nerves and it’s often more fun to make people believe something ridiculous than to play the superiority card all the damn time. Plus Colbert did Strangers With Candy.
